Here’s a tarot spread to help you attune to the magical energies of Lammas: gratitude, abundance, growth, and reflection.

Lughnasadh Tarot Spread

Lughnasadh (August 1st in the Northern Hemisphere, February 1st in the Southern) is the first of the year’s three harvest festivals – also known as Lammas – and it’s a time to celebrate the earliest fruits and grains of the season.

Whether you grow your own food, buy it from a farmer down the road, or simply enjoy the bread, corn, tomatoes, peaches, and squash that this time of year brings, you’re benefiting from a whole cycle of hard work coming to fruition. And that’s really what Lughnasadh is about: pausing to notice what’s ripening in your life, both literally and energetically.

Each sabbat carries its own psychological and spiritual themes, and at Lughnasadh those themes are gratitude, abundance, growth, and reflection.

This simple four-card tarot spread will help you tune into those energies and get clear on how to nurture them in a way that’s uniquely suited to you, right now. You can do it any time around Lughnasadh: on the day itself, or in the fortnights leading up to it or following it.

All you will need is a tarot deck and a notebook or journal. And maybe a candle, incense, and Lammas altar (if you want to get fancy).

Lammas Tarot Spread

Lughnasadh Tarot Spread

Grab your tarot deck.

Find the Empress card and pull it out. This will serve as your significator: it will symbolize you owning all your magic and power on Lammas. Place it in the center (as shown).

Now, relax, center your mind, and invoke the Divine in any way you prefer.

Set the intention to tune in deeply to the deep and ancient energies of Lammas. Ask to be shown what it will most benefit you to know. Add any burning questions you may have, like: How can I summon all my power? In what ways might I deeply and comprehensively heal? What guidance will help me stand up for myself courageously? How can I manifest my heart’s desire?

Conjure up the feelings of empowerment you crave. Try them on like a hat. Feel as if they are already 100% present for you. Breathe deeply and smile.

Now, shuffle the deck. Stop when you feel intuitively guided to stop. Cut the deck once or twice.

Take the top four cards off the top of the deck and lay them out, face up. Use the image above as a template. Put the first card at the “1” location, the second at “2,” and so on.

Card One: Reflect

Lughnasadh Lammas

Gaze at card one. Contemplate it. It holds a hint to how you’ve evolved over the past year. Maybe you went through heartbreak, or transformation, or wild success. Or maybe all three. Perhaps your evolution was obvious and perhaps it was subtle. With kindness and self-compassion, let the card illuminate something significant about your journey.

Grab a journal or notebook. Using the card as a lens, write about how you’ve changed, what you’ve learned, and how your values have shifted since last year around this time.

(Hint: start writing without a plan and keep writing for at least one full page without stopping. This is a secret to accessing the wealth of info you know but didn’t know you knew.)

Card Two: Celebrate

Lughnasadh Lammas

This card asks you to honor your triumphs. It may depict a challenge you surmounted or a victory you experienced. It may point to something physical, emotional, or spiritual.

In your journal or notebook, list all the many successes you’ve experienced within the last year, big or little. Brainstorm some fun ways to reward yourself and celebrate.

Card Three: Savor

Lughnasadh Lammas

As the first harvest festival, Lammas asks us to stop working hard for just a moment so we can enjoy the sweet fruits of living.

Look at card three as you inventory the delightful and precious things you already have in your life experience. It may point directly to such blessings, or it may illuminate patterns that hold you back from experiencing them to the fullest.

You’ve worked so hard in so many areas. What sweet rewards have you earned? And how can you consciously enjoy life’s sweetness even more: not just at Lughnasadh, but always?

Card Four: Manifest

Lughnasadh Lammas

Lammas is a lush and fertile time of natural abundance, which is why it lends itself to money and manifestation magic of all varieties.

Card four offers insight on how you can summon even more luxurious prosperity into your life experience. It may point out a challenge to be overcome or a blessing to be fully enjoyed. Either way, it will share wisdom about how you can cultivate an even healthier relationship with money. As you contemplate this card’s message, remember to consider both sides of the golden coin: inner and outer, spiritual and practical.
