Spirit guides are a really important part of finding meaning and solace in the universe.
If you are just beginning your spiritual journey, you may have heard of spirit guides, but did you know that there are seven different types of spirit guides that are there to help us in life?
In this article, I will tell you about the different types of spirit guides and what they are there for.
What is a Spirit Guide?
Firstly, I want to say that everyone has spirit guides no matter who they are.
Even if you have not really practiced spirituality before, you still will have a range of spirit guides that are looking over you.
Because there is a huge range of spirit guides, it can be hard to succinctly define the term, ‘spirit guides’.
Some of our spirit guides do not exist in the physical realm that we experience, but others do.
Some are souls of the deceased, whereas others have never had a physical form.
Spirit guides can appear in so many different forms, and therefore it is really useful to know the different types of spirit guides.
The main thing that defines spirit guides is that they exist to help us on our journey in life.
They are here to protect us and guide us and will do so even if we are not connected with them.
They spur on our spiritual growth and allow us to connect with higher realms.
Some spirit guides have been with us all our lives, whilst others will come to us when we are in need.
They can give us advice, comfort us when upset, and send us messages of joy and peace.
The Different Types Of Spirit Guides
Now we know the general definition of spirit guides, and can see the importance of them in our lives, let’s take a look at the different types of spirit guides that are there to help us.
When it comes to the question of how many different types of spirit guides there are, truly nobody knows.
Some people claim that the only true spirit guides we have are our guardian angels, but others purport the existence of over ten types of spirit guides.
I have connected with seven different types of spirit guides, and because of this, I am going to tell you about these seven spirits.
Guardian Angels
The first spirit guide I am going to discuss is our guardian angels.
These spirit guides are with us from our birth until our death and are for us exclusively.
They are assigned to us before we are born, and we have more than one looking out for us.
Our guardian angels are like our special heavenly support team that is there to give us love, hope, and faith throughout our time on earth.
I must point out that, even though many people traditionally link angels to religion, you do not have to follow a specific religion to believe in angels.
Guardian angels are for everyone around the world, and no matter what religion we follow, we have them.
Our guardian angels are to help us with our spiritual journey and give us unconditional love.
Unlike other spirit guides, however, we will probably never see or hear directly from our guardian angels (unless we are really lucky!).
They exist on a different level of consciousness and rarely show themselves in person to us.
However, our guardian angels will often send us messages via numbers or physical objects, like white feathers.
They will send us signs to remind us that they are there, or hide messages in the physical world for guidance.
Archangels
Another important spirit guide type is archangels.
Unlike our personal guardian angels, archangels are there for everyone and can connect to whoever tries to connect with them.
As you can probably tell by their name, archangels are the highest form of angels in existence.
The existence of archangels has long been discussed, with cultures from around the world purporting the existence of these spirit guides.
There are seven different archangels; Micheal, Raphael, Gabriel, Ariel, Chamuel, Azreal, and Jophiel.
All seven archangels have their own areas of expertise and ways in which they can help you on your journey in life. These are:
- Archangel Micheal is the saint of protection and leadership. He can be called upon for guidance and help.
- Archangel Raphael is here for healing, be it emotional or physical.
- Archangel Gabriel is the angel of communication. When we are wanting to send or receive messages, we can pray to Gabriel.
- Archangel Ariel is the saint of animals and wildlife. When we are wishing to connect to nature, we can call upon Archangel Ariel for guidance.
- Archangel Chamuel is the angel of peace and kindness. He exists to heal and spread love.
- Archangel Azreal is known as the saint of death and grief, helping you deal with these aspects of life.
- Archangel Jophiel is the saint of beauty, allowing us to see beauty and light in the world around us. By connecting with him, we can manifest beauty and positivity.
These archangels can work with different people at the same time, and we can connect with them through prayer and meditation.
Animal Spirit Guides
Unlike our guardian angels and the archangels, our animal spirit guides will often appear in physical form to us.
The idea of spirit animals comes from Native American tradition and their belief that we can learn and be guided by mother nature.
We have a deep connection with the natural world and the animals that exist within it.
However, we typically will have one specific spirit animal guide that helps us on our journey in life.
This animal will appear in our dreams and in person.
Our animal totem will be with us throughout our lives, watching over us and giving support.
They choose us when we are young and follow us on our journey.
Maybe you will frequently see crows in nature, and feel a deep connection with them?
Or, perhaps, you will regularly dream about bears.
If so, this animal may be your spirit animal.

Elemental Spirits
Our elemental spirit guides are spirits that embody the four primary elements of the world which are water, fire, air, and earth.
For a lot of spiritualists, the four elements are really important.
This is because these four elements create everything we see, and help balance out the world.
We can connect with the elements in spirituality in order to harmonize and ground ourselves.
Elemental spirits will often inhabit physical things in nature that we can see and touch.
For example, the earth’s elemental spirit guides inhabit trees and flowers.
Similarly, the water elemental spirit guides can exist in waves and waterfalls.
The four different elemental spirit guides can assist us in different ways.
By connecting with the earth’s elemental spirit guides, we can balance our energy, cleanse our auras, and keep grounded.
The fire elemental spirit guides can assist us in ideas and intentions, whereas the water elemental spirit guides can harmonize our emotions.
Last but not least is the air elemental spirit guides, which can be used to strengthen our minds and logic skills.
Ascended Masters
Another very important type of spirit guide is the ascended masters.
These are souls of people who have existed on earth and have now transcended their bodies and exist in higher realms of existence.
On earth, these souls were passionate and enlightened.
They often taught people and helped others.
Because of this, they have spiritually transformed into ascended masters.
They are here to help us on our spiritual journeys.
We can learn a lot from ascended masters, and they can also help us when we are in need.
We can see the existence of ascended masters in so many different cultures and religions.
In Christianity, Mother Mary and Jesus have ascended masters that exist to help our spiritual growth on earth.
We also have these spirit guides in Eastern religion too, such as Mahavatar Babaji and Gautama Buddha.
Because ascended masters are found in such a vast range of teachings and philosophies, it suggests that they are all linked together with the same common goal of enlightening humanity on earth.
Ancestors
We are personally connected to certain spirit guides, and this is because they are our ancestors.
These spirit guides might be people that we knew on earth and who have passed away, or could be ancestors that we feel connected to.
For so many people across the globe, talking to a departed loved one is a huge part of spiritual healing and growth.
We often feel as if these people are still here, watching out for us.
This is because they are!
Their souls are still connected with ours and can give advice or support when we need it.
Some ancestral spirit guides are people that we have not met, but existed on earth long before we did.
However, because of our bloodline and genetic memory, we are sometimes visited by these spirit guides.
Gods and Goddesses
Gods and Goddesses appear in loads of different religions and teachings and have been discussed since the dawn of humanity.
Most cultures around the world appeal to certain Gods or Goddesses, and so many of these spirit guides share similar characteristics.
We may believe in a specific God or Goddess, or we may simply believe in a higher source of energy and power.
From the Norse Gods of Odin and Tyr, to the Christian Holy Trinity, to the Wicca deities the Triple Goddess and the Horned God, humanity is full of these spirit guides.
We can appeal to whichever Gods and Goddesses we like, and allow them to help us throughout our lives.
Like Archangels, Gods and Goddesses are here to help everyone and can connect to us wherever we are.
